Taught and coached 27 years at Mt Gilead Schools - started the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Mt Gilead - started the Mt Gilead Cross Country program at Mt Gilead in 1969 and coached it until 1989 - coached Track, Basketball, JH Football - 1985 Regional Track Champion Coach - Fie Straight MOC Cross Country titles - 1969 Cross Country team 17th in State - numerous Sectional and District titles won - State meet official 8 years and State Advisory Board 3 yrs - Distinguished Service Award from Ohio Track and Cross Country Coaches Association

 
Ronald Holtrey

1958 Edison Graduate.  Four year starter on basketball and baseball teams; all county Junior and Senior years.  Full athletic scholorship to Ohio Northern University.  Starter at ONU four years in basketball, three years in baseball.  High school Varsity Basketball Coach 1962-1967.  Inducted into ONU Hall of Fame in 1985.

 
Ronald Nixon

1964 Graduate -- Nine time letter winner, track-basketball-football.  All-Conference honors: football - 3 years; basketball - 2 years; track - 4 years.  41 varsity touchdowns.  Track records:  220 yard dash in 23.0 seconds (1964); 440 yd dash 51.8 seconds (1963).  Coached football, basketball, and track for 15 years.

1994 Graduate.  Lettered in Track and Football four years, basketball one year.  First Team All-Ohio Conference (football) - 2 years.  First Team North Central Ohio Coaches Association - 2 years.  1993 NCOCA "Back of the Year".  1993 First Team All-State.  1993 Conference leading scorer.  Played football for two years at Anderson University.

1973 Graduate.  All-State football and basketball teams.  Most Valuable PLayer Mid-Ohio Conference for football.  Track records in high jump and discus.  Played football at Miami of Ohio 1973-1978.

 
Kim Smith Baldridge

1983 Graduate.  Track 1980: First place 100, 200 Mile Relay, 400 (school record 59.8 seconds); 1982: School records in 100 ( 12.2), 200 (25.2 ), 4x400 meter relay (4:04.2), won 100, 200, 4x400 relay in MOC Meet (MG girls won championship), placed 4th at State Meet in 200; 1983: MOC Meet first place 400 (MG girls won championship), won 100 & 200 at District meet, won 200 and placed third in 100 at Regional meet, placed 3rd in 200 and 8th in 100 at State meet.  Competed in sprints at Ashland College.

 
Denny Gallegher

1964 Graduate.  Basketball 1961-64 -- all mid-Ohio first team 62, 63, 64.  Scored 46 points Feb 9, 1963 - school record.  Basketball Mid-Ohio Player of the Year 1964.  Varsity Golf 1961-64.  Ohio State golf team 66-68.  BigTen Golf Championship 1966.  Played in U.S.Amatuer 1967 and 1977.  U.S. Open 1984.  Ohio Mid-Amateur Champion 1992 and 1997.

 
Ronald McCracken

1970 Graduate.  Football halfback 1969 scored 102 points, rushing records: 377 yds and five touchdowns vs Buckeye Valley; 1969 Best Back; 1969 Mid-Ohio All League Team, All District, All Ohio Class A.  Track: 1970 Central District Indoor Champions, 1970 Richwood Relays Outstanding Men's Track award.  Track times: 100 - 10.1, 200 - 23.4, pole vault 13 feet.

 
Robert Payne

1936 Graduate.  Basketball: 1936 All-County Team. Morrow County Champions, first wound winner Central District.  Baseball 1933-36.  Football 1935 Mid-State League Champions.  1935 - All Mid-State League First Team.  Played football at Ohio Northern. Coached football while teaching in Columbiana, Jackson, and Lancaster, Ohio. 

 
Paul Buckmaster

1923-1925 student.  Football: 1923 quarterback "A true triple threat man whose running passes were a delight to see"  1924 Halfback: "A quadruple or quintuple threat man for he punted, drop kicked, passed, smashed the line, ran the ends, and received passes in stellar fashion".  A major force in the revitalization of the MG football program, he scored 7 touchdowns in the last 6 games of the season.  Basketball: All County and Central District Team forward: "A Purple and white streak" (Quotes from the 1924 and 1924 Mizpahs).

 
John Chapman

1973 Graduate.  Eight varsity letters in 4 sports.  Football: 1972 - As quarterback/safety led team to Mid-Ohio Conference Championship; rushed for 510 yards, completed 66% of passes for 669 yards and 9 touchdowns with 0 interceptions.  First Team All-League Quarterback.  Basketball: 1972-73 - First Team All-League  Baseball: 1972 - Second Team All-League Catcher.  Track: 1973 - Finished second in the 880 yard run in the All-County Track Meet and was a member of the record setting two-mile relay team.  Played Division IAA football at Army from 1973-1975.

 
Robin (Keane) Hardaway

1989 Graduate.  Track: Varsity 4 years.  All-MOC in 100, 200, and 400 meter relay for 3 years.  Outstanding Sprinter all four years.  1989: Seventh in State prelims in 100 meters.  Tied school record in 100 meter.  Anchored the 400 meter relay team which set a new school record of 50.9   Volleyball: Varsity 3 years.  1988 - All MOC, Most Valuable Player.  Basketball: Varsity 4 years.  Coaches Award as a Sophomore, Defense Award as a Junior.

 
Gale Weller

1938 Graduate.  As a Freshman he was a very powerful runner and a lead blocker as starting fullback -- the team won the Mid-State League Championship.  The 1937-38 team lost only one game.  Also an outstanding defensive line backer.  All Mid-State League team 4 years.   Basketball: 4 years  Baseball: 3 years   Track:  Senior Year   Played football at Western Reserve University and Ohio Northern.

 
Rod Clinger

1972 Graduate.  Football: 3 letters; All Conference 1 year.  All Conference Honorable Mention 1 year.  Basketball: 2 letters.  All Conference 1 year.  All Conference Honorable Mention 1 year.  Track and Baseball: 1 year.  Played college varsity basketball and five years of semi-pro football.  Coached junior high and varsity football and junior high basketball.

 
Jeff Harper

1977 Graduate.  Football: 3 letters.  1st Team All MOC (1977).  Baseball: As a pitcher - 1st Team All MOC (1976, 1977).  1st Team All Sectional and 1st Team All District (1977).  Track: 1 letter.  Pitched for Division I University of Nevada-Las Vegas 1978 (6-1).  Pitched for Otterbein College 1980-82.  1st Team All OAC Conference Pitcher (1981, 1982). 1st Team Division III NCAA.  Baseball All-American - 1982. 3 letters.

 
Chris Kubbs

1976 Graduate.  Football: 4 years.  1st Team All Conference running back (1975). Basketball: 4 years.  Baseball: 4 years.  1st Team All Conference (1976).  Ohio Northern: NCAA 9th leading rusher in the nation and 1st in yards per carry in the nation.  Baseball over .300 batting average for two years. Head Coach at MGHS and Pleasant (baseball) and at Lakewood and Pleasant (football).  Coached State Champion football teams at Pleasant.

 
Jack Lancaster

1950 Graduate.  Football: 3 letters.  1st Team All Mid-State Running Back (junior year).  Co-Captain, All Mid-Buckeye running back and All Ohio running back (senior year).  Basketball: 2 letters.  All Mid-Buckeye Honorable Mention (senior year).  Attended University of Kentucky on a football scholarship.

 
Sue Willeke Middaugh

1983 Graduate.  Basketball: 4 letters.  All MOC; Best Free Throw % - 81% (1982-83).  Track: 4 letters.  State Qualifier in 1600 meter relay; team ran a 4:01 school record at Regionals (1982).  Volleyball: 3 letters.  MOC Honorable Mention (1982).  Football Cheerleader: 1979.  Earned 4 letters in track at Ohio Northern. 

Harley Hanna

1931 Graduate,  Basketball: played as a forward.  Unanimous pick for All County; regular season high scorer for Mt Gilead with 119 points as a junior and 160 points as a senior.  Carried the team to the county championship as a junior.  Football: Played his senior year as the quarterback.  Attended Ohio State University and played trumpet in the OSU band until called to duty in the Army Air Corps.  Completed his degree in accounting through LaSalle University.

Brian Hershey

1986 graduate.  Track: 1985 and 1986 -- Placed second both years at the State Meet in the 100 meter (10.8 seconds as a senior) and 200 meter.  First place in Class A District Meet in the 100 meter.  Set school record in the 100 meter (10.79 seconds) at the 1986 Regional Meet.  All Conference, All District, All Region, and All State.  1986 MG Outstanding Sprinter.  Track athlete at Rio Grande College.  Football: 3 year letterman.

Shane Schaffer

1991 graduate.  Track: Set Mt Gilead Invitational 400 meter, MOAC 400 meter (49.6 seconds) and 200 meter records.  Set school and conference records in the 4x400 relay.  1990 and 1991 -- MG Outstanding Sprinter and Most Valuable Runner.  All Conference, All Central District, All Region.  Participated four years at track Nationals for Anderson University -- three time Conference MVP.  Football: 2 years.  Cross Country: 2 years, All Central District, Regional Qualifier.

            Larry Furniss

Coach honoree.  1965 graduate.  Golf: Coached the 1985 State Championship golf team.  His MGHS teams also won over 300 matches, 6 consecutive league titles, district titles, and set the all time State of Ohio scoring title.  Track: 4 year letterman.  Held long jump record at MGHS for 20 years.  Also held Elgin and Richwood Relays long jump record.  Football: 3 year letterman.  1964 Most Valuable Offensive Player.  Basketball: 4 years

Dwight Jensen

1922-1925 student.  Basketball: 3 years.  All County and Central District Center, 1925.  Mount Gilead was Morrow County Champion, runner-up in Central District Tournament, 1925.  Track: Competed in high jump in newly formed 1925 MGHS track team (with a jump of 5'5").  Football: 2 years.  Charter member of MGHS "M" athletic association.  Transferred to lake Forest Academy his senior year.  Played football as an end at Ohio Wesleyan University and was selected for the All-Buckeye Conference team as a senior.

Rick McPeek

1976 Graduate.  Track: 4 year letterman.  Mid-Ohio Conference 100 and 220 yard dash champion and anchor of the 880 yd relay champions; co-record holder of the 100 yd dash, 1976.  Member of MGHS record 880 yard relay team.  Football: 3rd team All-Ohio, 1st team All-District, 1st Team All-MidOhio Conference 1975.  Outstanding Back Award, 1975.  Member of 1974 MOC Champion Team, 1974,  MGHS Assistant Football and Track Coach, 1983-84.  Coach and player in various Army football and softball teams during 29 1/2 years of service in the US Army.

Jim Rizor

1975 Graduate.  Football: 3 year letterman.  All Conference 1973, 1974.  Central District 2nd Team, 1973.  Central District 1st Tem and Back of the Year, 1974.  MOC Commissioner Award as the top league scorer, 1974.  2nd Team All-Ohio, 1974.  Played semi-pro football for three years and at Glendale Commuity College for two years.  Track: 4 year letterman.  2nd Team All District, 1975,  2nd Place at Central District Indoor Track Meet, 1974 (pole vault, 11 ft 6 in).
 

Brent Bachelder
1976 Graduate.  Football: 1975 Mid-Ohio Conference First Team, All-Central District Offensive Guard; All Ohio Honorable Mention, Outstanding Line Award, Most Tackles Award (69 tackles), Team Co-Captain.  Varsity letterman and starter three years.  172 career tackles.  Post High School: Volunteer swim coach for the Fremont Ross High School Varsity Men's and Women's Swim Teams 2003-06.

Coach and administration honoree.  Baseball: MGHS Head Varsity Coach 1968-1970; Mid-Ohio League Champions 1969, 1970.  AA Central District Champions 1970; Otterbein College Assistant Varsity Coach 1971-1975; OhioState University Assistant Varsity Coach 1976; Worthington American Legion Baseball Head Coach 1972-1985 with a record of 520-96.  Football and Basketball: MGHS Assistant High School Coach 1968-1970.  Coached at Worthington High School for five years.  Administrative: Mount Gilead EVS Superintendent 1998-2002.  Facilitated the Ohio School Facilities Commission-Expedited Local Partnership Program (Phase 1) to renovate MGHS including an auditeria, gymnasium, and classrooms, and to construct a new elementary school building.
 
Rick Vanhouten

1983 Graduate.  Basketball: 1982-83 - Team MVP, All MOC Firs tTeam, All Central District, Played in Mansfield News Journal North-South All Star Game.  The team was the 1982-83 league champion.  Baseball: 1982 - All MOC First Team; Central District First Team; Team batting average leader.  Played on two MOC championship teams - 1982 and 1983.  High school pitching record 16-1.  Post High School: Played baseball at Mt Vernon Nazarene College for four years; ranked 12th on all time homerun list.  2005 Pine Lakes Golf Champion.  Current member of Professional Bowlers Association and competes on the regional level.

 

Dan Campbell
1983 Graduate.  Cross Country:   1981 – Central District Champion, School record 2.5 miles, 14th place in State Meet.  1982 – MOAC Individual Champion, School record 5K, and 4 year Varsity Letterman.  Track:  1982 – MOAC Mile and 2 Mile Champion, School record 2 mile, 9th Place State Meet 1600 Run. 1983 – MOAC Mile and 2 Mile Champion, 4 year Varsity Letterman, Class of 1983 Scholar Athlete Award.  Post High School: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Ashland University in 1989.

1967 Graduate.  Football: All Mid-Ohio Conference, 1st All Distrct, 2nd All Ohio, 4 Year Varsity Letterman.  Basketball: 3rd All Mid-Ohio Conference, 2 year Varsity Letterman.  Track: Regional Tract Meet Long Jump & Discus, 4 Year Varsity Letterman.  Post High School:  Morehead State University – 4 year starter, played 39 Collegiate Games, held record for longest pass for “Touchdown” 62 yards.  My Claim to Fame: “I actually played against Ed O’Neal (Al Bundy) at Youngstown State in 1971.

1996 Graduate.  Basketball:  MOAC 1st Team – 2 years (95-96), District II 1st Team – 2 years (95-96), 2nd Team Associated Press Division 3 – 2 years (95-96), Most Valuable Player – 3 years (94-96).  1994 – MOAC 2nd Team, District II 2nd Team, Honorable Mention – Associated Press Division 3.  1995 – Honorable Mention – All Ohio Division 3. 1996 – Special Mention – All Ohio Division 3, Ashland All Star Game, 4 Year Varsity Letterman, Captain, All Time Scoring Leader (1098), Assists leader, steals leader, and games played a career (86).  Volleyball: 2nd Team All MOAC, 2 Year Varsity Letterman, and captain.  Post High School: Played 3 years basketball at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y.
