Paul
Elliott Graham, age 77, of Mount Gilead, died unexpectedly on Monday
morning, May 12, 2008, from injuries sustained in a trucking accident.
He was born in Greensburg, Kentucky, on November 17, 1930, the son of the late
Felding Lively and Amanda “Meme” (Whitlow) Graham.
With his older brothers serving in the war, Paul left early school to help
work on the family farm.
Just before leaving for the Korean Conflict himself, Paul married his soul mate,
Mary (Powell) Graham, on December 22, 1951. For nearly fifty seven years, Mary
has been “his world,” and they shared an “undying love” and a “secret hiding
place.” Together they loved to be surrounded by family and have huge barbecues
on his custom eight foot grill. Paul and Mary attended the Gilead Friends
Church, whose Pastor renewed their vows for their golden anniversary in their
yard with all of their close family and friends in 2002.
Shortly after their wedding, Paul was deployed by the U.S. Army to serve in
Korea in 1952. He served for two years as a radio operator, a Veteran of the
Korean Conflict. A “jack of all trades in the oil industry,” Paul followed
the oil boom of Morrow County, moving his family from Kentucky to Mount Gilead
in 1963. He was a self employed oil producer, who knew everything there was to
know about the oil business. Paul was best known for his “loud” red oil truck
he drove throughout the State of Ohio. He was a member of the Morrow
County Conservation Club and the Korean War Veteran’s Association of Marion.
An avid hunter, Paul earned the nickname of “Rambo” for his extensive collection
of knives and guns. An excellent marksman, no animal wanted in the woods when
he was hunting, as he could “split the hairs on a flea from 100 yards away.” He
enjoyed many trips to Colorado to hunt elk. With a love for the outdoors,
Paul enjoyed fishing in any local fishing hole and deep sea fishing, especially
with his grandchildren. Having a special place in their grandfather’s
heart, Paul planted a different species of tree for each new member of his
family that “no one was allowed to touch.” “A simple man with a simple
plan,” Paul learned his life lessons from the “school of hard knocks.” He was
brilliant, but in his own unique way; he could do complicated math problems in
seconds using his own self taught formulas and he could build/fix anything out
of a four inch pipe, coat hanger, and duct tape. With a long story or a
joke for “everything,” Paul always made everyone laugh. And no matter the
circumstance, his family and friends knew if they needed help or a shoulder to
lean on Paul would make everything “okay.”
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Mary; five children: Paul K. (Vivian)
Graham of Marengo, Doug Graham of Mount Gilead, Donna Marie(Rick) Manning of
Pinch, West Virginia, Libby (David Humphrey) Seitz of Mansfield, and Jannetta
(Doug) Martin of Mount Gilead; eighteen grandchildren and seventeen
grandchildren with three more on the way; a sister, Bell of Campbellsville,
Kentucky; and four beloved Chihuahuas: Babe, Matt, Buddy, and Peter Paul.
In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his two brothers:
Harold and Ralph “Jake”; and three sisters: Flossie, Teresa Jean, and Lethie.

recently, she worked for Attorney William Bringman in Fredericktown until she
was no longer able because of her illnesses. In 1972, Beverly returned to

Church. When she was younger, Beverly loved to play the piano and organ in
church, and with her beautiful voice she had sang on the radio. Beverly enjoyed
listening to books on cd, genealogy, and taking census throughout Morrow and the
surrounding counties.
With her “happy go lucky” personality, Beverly could always get a smile out of
her friends and family. At times she could be a bit ornery and even recently
she had everyone “rolling” with laughter in the nursing home.

the Sparta United Methodist Church. A homemaker, Rose always kept herself
busy, and she enjoyed taking pride in having a spotless home by never slacking
on her housework. No matter how busy life would be though, she always managed
to “get it all done” so she wouldn’t miss out on the fresh coffee and deserts at
the restaurants she loved going out to eat at. Whenever any of her
friends and family would visit, Rose made sure they did not leave her table with
an empty stomach. She was a wonderful cook, whose specialty was baking pies.
To Rose, her family was everything. She loved spending time with her children
and grandchildren, and often encouraged them to play cards with her, especially
euchre. Every year, Rose would look forward to the Morrow County Fair, as
she loved watching the draft horse pull with her many friends.

“Dave” Kyle David Vipperman , 69, of Cardington died unexpectedly
Wednesday evening at his residence.
He was born on January 8, 1939 in Delaware, Ohio the son of the late Kyle L. and
Stella Mae “Stevens” Vipperman.
Dave recently moved back to the area after being away for 20 years, living in
the states of Kentucky and Tennessee. A jack-of-all trades Dave worked in
various fields, as a truck driver for Gossett Trucking, a plumber for Soulier
Plumbing and Heating, and most recently as a maintenance man for Holiday Inn in
Tennessee. Dave had an extensive assortment of antiques and various
collectibles. His collection included antique tractors, “Hot Wheels”,
“Matchbox”, and “Barbie’s”. If all went to plan his purchase would result in a
quick sale of the item for profit. Dave once sold a “Barbie” doll for $1500!
He always said he should have been born 200 years ago. His love of coon
hunting, country and western movies, and antiques placed him in a generation far
beyond his years. He also had a passion for classic cars and trucks, which
led to the restoration of a few. His knowledge of electricity led him and
his grandson on a mission to create their own. Their working model came
complete with a water wheel and the ingenious use of Chevy alternators.
Dave will be remembered as a fun-loving and generous man with an ornery streak.
One for speaking his mind, you always knew where you stood with Dave.
As a father, no one could compare. He was described as “the most loving dad
anyone could have” and a “good dad”. When asked for a couple of words to
describe Dave, “Dog Gone” came to mind. His signature phrase he would use with
regularity.
He will be missed by his four children Steve (Kelley) Kidwell of Mount Gilead,
Chris (John) Dailey) of Mount Gilead, Jim Vipperman of Cardington, and Glenn
(Chris Wolford) Vipperman of Mount Gilead; 11 grandchildren; 8 great
grandchildren; his two sisters Virginia (Don) Ward of Westfield and Linda
Vipperman of Southern Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and
great nephews; and his favorite ex-wife Mary Vipperman of Cardington.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Dale
Vipperman and his sister Delores Coots.
Friends may call on the family on Sunday May 4, 2008 from 2-5 p.m. at the Snyder
Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 North Main Street, Mount Gilead. Pastor Donna
Ball will conduct services there on Monday at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place

Donald I. "Don" Sherman, age 73, of Mount Gilead, died early Thursday
morning, April 24, 2008, at the Morrow County Hospital following a brief
illness.
On May 28, 1934, Don was born at home in Chesterville, Ohio, the son of the late
Fostor and Blanche (Hair) Sherman. Later, he graduated from Chesterville High
School in the Class of 1953.
Shortly after graduation, Don married his sweetheart, Karen Wharton, on May 29,
1954. Together they shared a love of camping, fishing trips to Canada, and
driving to Florida for the winter. They had attended the Pulaskiville Community
Bible Church. A very skilled workman, Don started working as an
independent contractor laying brick and block, called Sherman Masonry for
eighteen years. His skill can be seen throughout Morrow County on work he had
done, such as the Leaf Restaurant for which he laid all the brick. Having
been raised on a farm, Don always aspired to farm again. When his body grew
tired of laying block, he turned to his farming roots and for over ten years he
raised livestock and grew grain. With his livestock, Don had raised Corriedale
Sheep, a fondness he shared with his family.
"As a jack of all trades," next Don pursued operating his own excavating
business until last fall. He was especially proud of the pond he built for his
wife and family to enjoy. With an ability to "fix or repair anything," Don
was everyone’s first call when something needed fixed. A willing volunteer
for Franklin Township, Don ran the grader many days and nights to clear the
snowfall for his township. Don loved to hunt and teach the younger
generations some of his hunting skills. Always funloving Don was known as "Picky
Pa Pa" for his merciless teasing. Nevertheless, children would "light up" when
they saw Don coming for they loved his ornery nature. An "overwhelmingly
generous man" with his time and resources, Don would give even if it was at his
own expense. "The rock of the family," when anyone needed help or advice
they would "holler for Don." They knew they could count on him.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Karen; a daughter, Kathy Robinson of
Fredericktown; two sons: Dan (Nicole) Sherman, and Dale (Connie) Sherman, both
of Mount Gilead; nine grandchildren: Amanda (Jeff) Bump, Brent (Stacy) Robinson,
Galen and Garrett Robinson, Daniel Sherman, Raven (Daniel) Prine, Samantha,
Kristina and Victoria Sherman; seven great-grandchildren: Treah, McKayla,
McKenzie, McKennah, Joey, J.C., and Lane; a brother, Dean (Delores) Sherman of

Packer of Ontario, and Letha (Al) George of Delaware; two brothers-in-law: Roger
(Sheryl) Gilmore of Navarre, FL, and Phil Gilmore of Bucyrus; and numerous
nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant son, Duane
Sherman; and infant brother, Dewey Sherman.
His family will greet friends on Sunday from 2 – 6 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral
Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead, where services celebrating
his life will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Marvin Gassman

work. He was employed as a Durable Medical Engineer for the Drug Store in
Columbus. He was at his best delivering and setting up medical equipment for
those in need. He always wanted to help people and enjoyed explaining the many
uses of the various equipment delivered. A man of the road, Rod would get
in his car, pick a direction, and drive until he felt the need to turn around.
He would drive anywhere and everywhere. Rod will pass on a “never give
up” attitude and a stubborn nature to his son Reuben. A son who he always
looked out for and made sure he had everything needed.
In addition to his father he will be missed by his son Reuben at home, step-son
Milton Colombe and his wife Tonya Bennett-Colombe, and their children Jacob
Steven, Allyson Marie, and Marcus Tyler of Delaware; and his brother Rick Ring
of Hazel Park, Michigan.

Eston
Bachelder, age 79, of Cardington, died late Saturday evening, April 12, 2008, at
the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus following a brief illness.
On December 13, 1928, he was born in Morrow County near Denmark, the son of the
late Theron G. and Roba M. (Fagley) Bachelder. Eston graduated from the
Chesterville High School Class of 1946.
While attending high school, Eston found his high school sweetheart, a young
lady by the name of Mildred Bishop, whom he passed many love notes to during
class. They married on April 3, 1949, and shared over 53 magical years until
she preceded him in death on August 6, 2002. When the two of them were together
you could hear their laughter from a good distance away, and they were an
inseparable pair. Their love created countless priceless memories for their
family. Together they enjoyed their beloved Ohio State Buckeyes and traveling.
Eston never knew a stranger and many of their trips were to be with friends; one
as far as the Netherlands after Eston years before had stopped and picked him up
along the road after his car had broken down.
After having worked for over eight years on the farm, Eston was surprised to be
drafted into the U.S. Army when he was 26 years old. A Veteran during the
Korean Conflict, he served as a mechanic and was stationed in California.
With farming in his blood and having been raised on a farm, you never could take
the farm from Eston. For over 50 years, he cared for dairy cows and planted
corn, wheat, and beans. Always hard at work, he loved everything about farming
no matter the circumstances. Even though he needed assistance to get onto the
machinery, he was still looking forward to using the equipment to help his son,
Roger this coming spring. Though he would never stop working, to Eston he
thought he was retired when he stopped taking care of the dairy cows in 1999.
After losing his hand in a corn picker in 1961, Eston persevered by learning and
inventing new ways to take care of his farm chores. His family can tell
stories for hours about Eston’s ingenuity with modifying equipment to maximize
his efforts. In 1964, he was even awarded the Outstanding Young Farmer of the
Year, by the RFO. Following a lifetime of achievements his family farm was
recently honored to have a cover story written in the American Farmer Magazine
in January of this year.
On the side, Eston enjoyed being a corn seed dealer and he worked for Hulting
Hybrids, Gold Tag, and Agripro. With his expertise, he earned the title of
Master Dealer.
Eston was elected as a township trustee of Chester Township for twelve years and
was caretaker of Maple Grove Cemetery. He was a member of the Federal Land Bank
Advisory Board, the Soil Conservation Committee, and the Consolidated Electric
Cooperative of Morrow County. Eston was an active member of the Harmony
Chapel United Methodist Church, where his wife played the organ for over forty
seven years. On work projects at the church, he often made people marvel about
how efficiently he could start and drive a nail despite only have one hand.
Both Eston and Mildred were members of the Order of the Eastern Star, Evelyn
Chapter # 146, and had the privilege of being the Worthy Grand Master for the
State of Ohio in 1993. For over fifty years, he was a member of the F. & A.M.
Chester Lodge # 238, where he was a Master Mason. With a love of
collecting baseball caps, Eston was known to “pay $30,000 for a new baseball
cap, so they would throw in a free tractor.” A faithful member of the
Wendy’s Liars Club, Eston never missed their eating get togethers for concern of
what they might say about him. Among his countless talents, Eston had a
way of making maple syrup taste unlike any his family and friends had ever
tasted. Famous for many “isms,” he had a different saying for every
occasion, most of which brought everything to light. Making friends
everywhere he went, Eston had a warm and jovial spirit that would make everyone
laugh. He will forever be remembered for his sincere huge smile.
He will be dearly missed by his two sons: Dr. Brian (Debra) Bachelder of Mount
Gilead, and Roger (Licia) Bachelder of Chesterville; a daughter, Deborah (Jack)
D’Aurora of Upper Arlington; a foster son, Jack (Jane) Edgell of Cardington;
five grandchildren: Jennifer, Nicholas, and Megan Bachelder, Teri Thompson, and
Christopher Crothers; a great grandson, Gabriel Wright; and a sister, Loretta
“Mae” Dunn of Mansfield, Ohio.
In addition to his wife and parents, Eston was preceded in death by his two
brothers: Leland and Vernon Bachelder, and two sisters: Retha Benson and Lena
Lewis.
His family will greet friends on Tuesday from 3 – 7 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral
Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead, where Masonic services will
follow at 7:15 p.m. Services celebrating his life will be held on Wednesday at

provided by the V.F.W. Post 8054 and AmVets Post 87 will follow in the cemetery

Dorothy
L. Cayse, age 82, of Mount Gilead died Sunday morning, March 30, 2008, at
the Morrow County Hospital Extended Care Facility following a three year battle
with health ailments.
On October 17, 1925, she was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of
the late Harvey and Lillian Wallick. Dorothy graduated from Pittsburgh High
School.
While vacationing with her family to Genevana Lake on the shores of Lake Erie,
Dorothy met a handsome local gentleman, Richard Harnist. Shortly after meeting
they married in Rock Creek, Ohio, where they lived and raised two children,
Richard Jr. and Nancy. After enjoying many family vacations to Florida, Richard
Sr. and Dorothy moved to Pompano Beach, Florida in 1966. Very unexpectedly, he
preceded her in death on November 21, 1971.
During her time in Florida, Dorothy worked for nearly twenty years for the Chris
Craft Corporation as a secretary in Pompano Beach, Florida, until her
retirement.
After a few years had passed, Dorothy found love again with Harold Cayse, whom
she enjoyed traveling, golfing, camping, and fishing with. He too preceded her
in death in 1992.
An avid bingo player, Dorothy often took bingo very “seriously” and was
notorious for how she would get into the game in Florida. In 1993, Dorothy
moved from Florida to Mount Gilead to be near her daughter and grandchildren.
To her family, she is known as “Grandma” for her love and devotion to her
grandchildren. She was always the first to offer to baby sit, take them to the
pool, or ride bicycles with them, just to name a few. While in Mount
Gilead, Dorothy loved volunteering as a Silver Twig at the Morrow County
Hospital three to four days a week in the Emergency Room, Reception area.
Several years she was honored as the volunteer who donated the most hours of her
time. She also attended the Trinity United Methodist Church, where she often
would make pies for the end of the month meals. With the heart of a lion,
Dorothy fought battle after battle in her three years at the MCH Extended Care,
where she earned the nickname “Miracle Lady” for how she would recover even
after being given only days to live. Despite her battles, she continued her
kind and loving ways and because of how she lived she “died with dignity.”
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy & Matthew
Pettigrew of Mount Gilead, and their children Stacey and Matthew; her son and
daughter-in-law, Richard Jr. & Linda Harnist of Houston, Texas, and his children
Phillip and Georgianna; and two sisters: Esther (George) Perry of Fullerton,
California, and Jane Montgomery of St. Petersburg, Florida.
Her family will greet friends on Tuesday from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral
Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mt. Gilead, where services celebrating her
life will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. with Pam Lamb-Hart officiating.

Paul R. “Pig” Bird Jr., age 75, of Chesterville, went to be with the
Lord early on Monday morning, March 3, 2008, at his residence surrounded by his
family following a three month illness.
He was born at his grandparents home in Marion County, Ohio, on October 5, 1932,
the son of the late Paul Sr. and Ruth (Hood) Bird. Paul graduated from
Chesterville Franklin High School in the Class of 1950.
While in school, Paul met his wife to be, Jacqueline Wiseman, who was two years
behind him in school. Shortly after she graduated they were married in
Lawrenceburg, Indiana on July 5, 1952. Together they shared fifty five
wonderful years of marriage. Five months after their marriage, Paul was
drafted into the U. S. Army, and was stationed in Korea during the Korean
Conflict. For twenty five years, Paul drove truck for Landmark of Columbus
until they closed in 1982. He continued driving truck for 5 years until he
retired in 1987. Following his retirement, Paul became a homebody as he
had grown tired of being away from home while driving truck. He enjoyed working
in the yard and kept a small garden. His lawn was extremely well manicured, as
he would mow three times a week whether it needed it or not. With a love
for harness racing, Paul often enjoyed getting away to the racetracks at Scioto
Downs. Rumor has it that when Paul was younger, he refused to share his candy
with his brothers and sisters and for this behavior he was given the nickname of
“Pig.” To this day, many of his friends and family can not resist calling him
by this fun nickname.
Paul was a member of the Retired Teamsters, and was a fifty year member of
Masonic Lodge 238 in Chesterville.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Jackie of Chesterville, four children:
Kenneth (Patricia) Bird of Cardington, Karen (Frank) Kearns of Marion, Kathy
(Brian) Mounts, and Karolyn (Robert a.k.a. “Doc”) Brandum, both of Cardington;

(Pat) Bird of Fredericktown; three sisters: Clara Landaker of Johnsville, Martha
Jane (Bill) Taylor of Chesterville, and Barbara (Carl) Robinson of St. Lucie,

Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.gompffh.com.Mary Jean Adams, 45, of Mount Gilead died Thursday
morning, February 28, 2008 at her home surrounded by her family.
She fought a courageous three year battle with cancer. A positive attitude got
her through the worst of her illness. “Attitude is the key” was her mantra.
She was born on February 4, 1963 in Mount Gilead the daughter of Robert D. and
Faith L. (Goldsmith) Creswell of Mount Gilead.
A resident of Mount Gilead her entire life, Jean was a graduate of Northmor High
School in the class of 1981 and a strong supporter of the schools. She
continued her education at The Ohio State University where she received her
bachelor’s degree in education.
After completing her college education she married Brian K.
Adams. They were united in marriage at Iberia Presbyterian Church on June 20,
1987.
Jean was dedicated to children with special needs. She used her exceptional
skill as a preschool teacher at Whetstone School. She attended the
Heartland Alliance Church, North Woodbury Campus.
With the ability to find a good bargain, Jean could fully appreciate a well
priced pair of shoes or new purse. She also displayed these skills at local
auctions. Jean spent hours watching her favorite television station “TV
Land”, during her illness. If she had to choose from one of the “oldies” the
Andy Griffith Show would be listed as her favorite. She could also get
lost in a quality book. She was particularly fond of mystery novels by Janet
Evanovich. Competitive in nature, Jean liked gathering the family around
the table for a game of Trivial Pursuit. She would drive herself crazy trying
to come up with the correct answer. She will be remembered as a
compassionate and loving woman. Through her illness she remained strong, never
wavered, and even maintained a sense of class about herself.
While she was very fond of her role as a teacher and church member, Jean’s most
cherished role was that of wife, mother, sister, and daughter. She loved her
kids and was very proud of all their accomplishments.
Left to cherish her memory are her parents Robert and Faith Creswell of Mount
Gilead; husband Brian; their children Mackenzie, Bridget, Spencer, and Jeremiah
Adams all at home; siblings Bill (Ruth) Creswell of Mount Gilead, Sandy (Steve)
